14 good psychological tips when playing golf

Tip #1: How to get the best start on your first tee box.

The first tee box can often make golfers nervous, which will certainly affect their swing. The trick to overcoming that is: take things slow. Walk slowly, speak slowly, breathe slowly, move slowly, think slowly.

Tip #2: How to hit Hole in One

If you aspire to hit a hole in one, you must focus on one thing and only one thing: the “hole” ignoring all other things, like water traps, sand, trees, wind, etc. When standing in front of the ball when hitting on the green. Imagine dividing the green into 4 parts, focusing on the part with the flag, if possible divide it into 4 smaller parts, focusing on the part with the flag, ideally dividing the green to the size of the flag hole. Right now, just focus on that one thing, everything no longer exists, it’s just you and the…hole.

Tip #3: Choose your club when hitting

For non-professional golfers, it is normal to have poor ball contact and not be able to achieve a fixed distance like on the practice range. So when choosing a club to put on the green, choose one number larger. For example, with that distance, if you think an 8-iron is suitable for you, choose a 7-iron, because if you slice the ball, the ball is not sweet. The ball can still be on the green or a little shorter, but if you hit it well, the ball will still just go over the green and still be around the green.

Tip #4: What to do when you feel stressed

When you feel stressed, take a deep breath and exhale slowly, sing softly, or hum in your throat. The saying “it’s easy” can be repeated over and over again. Some people may smile, or laugh, thinking of something funny. Or you can do some movements like shaking your arms, relaxing or bracing your legs. In short, what can help you relieve stress without attracting others’ attention?

Tip #5: Don’t rush the fight

Many times when playing with better players, they get on the green with only 2 shots, while I am huddled somewhere in the bushes, or “roasting peanuts” a few times while others are standing with their arms crossed, waiting. Not only that, there was another fighter standing behind, watching and waiting. All of these things will make you fall into a state of haste because you’re afraid that others will wait too long…and it will break even more. So what? During periods of movement, you can do it faster, or even run slowly. However, when standing in front of the ball, slow down, do something gentle to reduce stress, draft a few times, visualize the shot, ball trajectory and where the ball falls and make the shot. But don’t be sluggish, don’t address the ball, then stop aiming, change clubs, draft, think again that the wind seems to be holding you back… pick up a bunch of grass to check the wind direction, etc. That’s what makes people uncomfortable.

Tip #6: Keep your head from lifting prematurely

Every golfer likes to turn left to see where his ball goes in the hole or where it goes. This makes you lift your head early. Note here: do not lift your head, but your head must still rotate according to your shoulders. Instead of trying to hold back to keep your head from lifting prematurely, listen.

  • Listen to the sound of the ball falling into the hole
  • Listen to the sound of the clubhead hitting the ball

After hearing this sound, only and only then do you look wherever you want, let alone you. If you pay attention to listen to the sound, your head will maintain a natural position and your body will not be stiff, your swing will be smoother.

Tip #7: Tighten then relax

You have tried many methods but still get sliced, try this trick. At the ball to draft, squeeze your hands as tightly as possible, then relax your hands completely, then swing to draft, then enter the ball to hit. You will see surprising things happen.

This tip can also be applied to all parts of your body when you are stressed. Be as stiff as possible, then relax.

Tip #8: From near to far

You practice putting starting about 15cm away from the hole, then move 15cm away, and so on until you miss the putt, then you return to the position 15cm away from the hole. This will help you feel confident and worry-free after hitting the field with long putting distances.

This tip can also apply to short game or green approach shots. Play from near to far.

Tip #9: Draft swing vs real swing

You can see many golfers swing beautifully and very well, but when they actually swing, it’s completely different, this is because we are influenced by the ball. Try this tip: On the practice field, place 2 tees about 15cm apart. Place the ball on the 2nd tee, 1st tee left empty. Address the ball, swing into the first tee as if you had the ball. Then immediately address the ball and hit the second tee with the same swing. When hitting, don’t pay attention to the ball, focus on the tee.

Tip #10: How to chip better

Don’t think about hitting the ball, think about hitting the hole. Before chipping, visualize the ball flying through the air and landing at a specific point and then rolling into the hole. Apply this visualization to all short game shots and you will see great results.

Tip #11: How to hit the long club well

If you want to hit long clubs well, start with a short 7 or 8 iron, the club you feel most confident with. Practice some balls with an 8-iron, then switch to a long iron but hold it short like an 8-iron and swing like an 8-iron. Practice until you feel comfortable and make contact. good ball, then hold it a little longer, practice again, until you feel comfortable and hit well. And there will come a time when you hit a long club as well as you hit an 8-iron.

Tip #12: How to gain more clubhead speed

This trick is called “The swinging rope”. I imagined my arms as two ropes and swung them around my body. I try to remove all the tension, relax my arms completely and let them “whip” around my body. When I’m completely relaxed I know I’m ready to hit. This will help me keep my hands and arms loose, and gain more clubhead speed.

Tip #13: How to “groove” your swing

Grooving means training your club to move in a fixed, invisible groove, which is formed by habit and muscle memory. The tip here is: Close your eyes when practicing hitting the ball with irons, woods or putts.

You can also use this tip while you are playing on the field and you are not playing well. Close your eyes and swing a few times.

Tip #14: How to make practicing on the practice field more enjoyable

On the practice range, imagine yourself playing a Par 5, 545 yards long. Then you split the club and play with the goal of being on the green. For example, your driver shot 250, then you took a 5 iron and shot 170, and finally the shot on the green was 125 yards. Continue like that with different Pars and different lengths. You will feel less bored.
