Sapa is a very famous town, however, about 100km away is the Bac Ha plateau with its own unique beauty, people and culture.
Hoang A Tuong Mansion is an interesting tourist destination located in Bac Ha town, Lao Cai province that almost everyone is surprised to see. With a unique harmonious combination of Eastern and Western architecture, although it has been worn down by time, it still has a majestic appearance right in the middle of the Bac Ha plateau.
Before 1945, Hoang Yen Chao – the owner of this castle, a Tay ethnic person, was considered a landowner who exploited the people, engaged in illegal business and assisted the French army station. He was assigned to manage an entire region with up to 70% Mong people (also known as Meo people), so he was also known as King Meo.
The name Hoang A Tuong mansion is based on the name of Mr. Hoang Yen Chao’s son. In addition, this mansion also has other names such as King Meo mansion or Hoang Yen TChao castle (Hoang Yen Chao).
To demonstrate his power, after mastering the entire region’s economy, Hoang Yen Chao invited geographers and architects from France and China to design and build this mansion to live with his wife and children.
Hoang A Tuong mansion was built in the early twentieth century, taking about 7 years to complete from 1914 to 1921. Hoang A Tuong mansion was built on a large hill in Chau Bac Ha, now a Bac Ha town.
Hoang A Tuong Mansion was built based on the knowledge of two architects from two different cultures, so the villa has a unique Asian-European style. Behind and on both sides of the villa are mountains, in front is a gently winding river.
Besides, with the harmonious combination of European and Asian styles, the house’s architecture also shows the royalty of the nobility, with sophisticated and balanced sculptural motifs. Patterns such as laurel branches embossed on the doors, symbolizing happiness and prosperity, or symmetrical arched railings, spiral staircases, brick-lined hallways, and small, elegant columns are Characteristic features of Western architectural style.
Although the house is large and majestic, the main color is white, so the overall look of the house is very airy and elegant. When you come here, you will not only be overwhelmed by the vastness of the house but also surprised by this unique design style. In addition to the high, wide arches that are asymmetrically but harmoniously interspersed, windows and doors are also used thoroughly to let in a lot of natural light, making the space more unique.
Different from the architecture of mansions in Vietnam at that time, Hoang A Tuong mansion was both the residence of Hoang Yen Chao’s large family and like a solid fortress protecting its owner. Closed rectangular layout with 36 surrounding rooms, total area up to 4,000m2. Around the mansion there are protective fences, each wall has battlements like a protective fortress.
In the middle of the house is a large yard that is often used to organize festivals, dances and entertainment. To enter the house, we have to go through a screen, into the mansion grounds, deep in front is the main house, on the left and right are the outhouses. Inside Hoang A Tuong palace, there are many arched doors that are unbalanced in height and low but overall are still very harmonious. In front of the arched doors are embossed, decorated with parallel sentences and elaborate motifs.
The two sides of the annex have almost the same architecture and layout, lower than the main house. Each row has two floors, three rooms are used for the wives of Hoang A Tuong father and son and their advisors. Near the outbuildings are two rows of houses with simpler architecture used as warehouses. Inside the mansion there are not only living rooms and offices, but also courtrooms and prison cells. All previous lawsuits from people in the area were brought here for trial.
In order to be stable over hundreds of years without being worn out by the sun and wind, the entire mansion is roofed with ceramic tiles, produced from clay extracted from the heart of the mountain under the supervision of foreign architects. The floor is paved with precious wood taken from the Hoang Lien Son range. Construction materials for Hoang A Tuong’s residence, such as limestone and cement, were all used expensive and transported by French plane….
