10 Vietnamese dishes recognized as ‘Asian specialties’

The Asian Records Organization recognizes Vietnamese dishes including banh mi, mussel rice, hot pot, grilled spring rolls and noodle soup as specialties of the continent.
On December 5, the Asia Records Organization headquartered in India announced a list of “Asian specialties” to promote, honor and suggest international tourists to enjoy on their upcoming trips.

In the latest list, Vietnam has 10 representatives, divided equally into two categories: food and gifts.
The 5 dishes are Asian specialties including: Saigon bread, Thua Thien Hue mussel rice, Phan Thiet Binh Thuan drop hot pot, Ninh Hoa Khanh Hoa grilled spring rolls and Soc Trang noodle soup.

5 natural specialties and gifts include: green rice from Hanoi Vong village, Quang Binh sweet potato, Thua Thien Hue sesame, Dalat Lam Dong strawberry and Tra Cuon Tra Vinh tet cake. Thua Thien Hue is a province with two honored specialties in the top 10.

Announcing the list of Asian specialties is an annual activity of the Asian Records Organization. Reputable organizations of each country in the region will send experts to search, synthesize and compile dossiers to nominate their country’s specialties to the Asian Records Organization. In Vietnam, the Asian Records Organization grants the right to select and nominate dishes to VietKings Records Organization.

2023 is the 4th time Vietnamese specialties are honored. The previous three times were 2022, 2013 and 2022. Vietnam currently has 60 dishes, including 38 dishes and 22 gifts, recognized by the Asian Records Organization. 11 Vietnamese specialties recognized in 2022 include: An Giang neem salad, Phu Quoc herring salad, U Minh Ca Mau fish sauce hotpot, Dong Thap lotus dishes, Hau Giang lath fish dishes, dishes from Phu Yen ocean tuna, dishes from Ben Tre coconut, Ly Son garlic, Lo Ren star apple Vinh Kim Tien Giang, Khanh Hoa bird’s nest and Phu Quoc myrtle wine.

Selection criteria are based on the popularity of the dish itself and its attractive flavor. Besides, the dish must have a regional flavor, be prepared from local spices and represent the culinary style of the place where it was born.
