Hoa Lu was chosen as the first capital of the feudal state government when Dinh Bo Linh ascended the throne in 968 …. Today the vestige of Hoa Lu Ancient Capital belongs to Truong Yen Commune, Hoa Lu District, Ninh Binh Province, nearly 100 km south of Hanoi. Although it was chosen as the capital of Dai Co Viet in a short time (42 years), there have been many events related to the destiny of the whole nation such as: associated with the career of three successive dynasties were the Dinh, the Tien Le and the Ly dynasties with historical marks: unifying the Jiangshan, beating the Tong – cleaning Chiem and begin the process to move capital to Hanoi.

If you look geographically, you will understand why King Dinh Tien Hoang came to Hoa Lu, he chose Hoa Lu to be the capital because: The mountains and hills surround the capital like a wall; Hoang Long river is meandering and Nho Quan and Gia Vien fields are vast and deep, naturally convenient for military.

The ancient capital of Hoa Lu was about 300 hectares wide, including Thanh Ngoai, Thanh Noi and Thanh Nam, surrounded by a series of rock mountains, majestic scenery, the gap between the mountainsides was built with brick soil. This is the main palace where the area of Dinh temple and Le temple are the center and also the place where Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang planted the flag of the country. In front of the palace, there is Ma Yen mountain, which is said to be used as a protect wall by King Dinh.
The citadel of Hoa Lu consists of two city walls lying next to each other and an adjacent mountain region, 3 rounds to form an 80-like shape facing east. According to the arrangement of Dinh Le dynasty, researchers were divided into 3 cities: East, West and South. However, because Nam citadel was just a dangerous and defensive military base on the back, it was often called individually in Trang An citadel, the other two were the places where the palace was located, so it was also called Hoa Lu citadel … . By 1010, when King Ly Thai To moved the capital to Thang Long, Hoa Lu was just an ancient capital considered a very important military base of Dai Viet army and people under the dynasties: Ly – Tran – Le – Mac – Tay Son … ..
Today the image of Hoa Lu ancient capital is no longer intact, but instead is a temple: King Dinh – King Le was erected right on the base of the ancient Hoa Lu ancient capital. The two temples are about 500m apart, due to the distance so tourists often call “Hoa Lu Ancient Capital” as “Temple of King Dinh – King Le”.
Emperor Dinh’s temple was built in the style of “Noi Cong Ngoai Quoc” on the basis of the ancient main palace, majestic with the mandarins house, the lotus lake, the fake mountain, the flower garden, the inner ritual and the three courts harem. At the street, there is “Long Sang” made of monolithic stone very vivid stones. Next is the burning house to worship the ancestors of the country. Inside is the harem where statues of King Dinh Tien Hoang and his sons are located. The carvings on the stone, on the wood with the themes of dragon, cloud, fairy, flowers … decorated at the temple are quite sophisticated.
King Le Temple is located about 500 meters away from King Dinh Temple and worshiping King Le Dai Hanh. King Le’s temple is smaller in size but has three courts: Dai Bai, Burning incense to worship Pham Cu Luong, who helped Le Hoan to ascend the throne; The main palace – worships Le Dai Hanh King (Le Hoan) in the middle, on the right is Le Ngoa Trieu (King Le’s son), on the left is Queen Duong Van Nga. King Le’s temple still holds many ancient architectural vestiges with elaborate carvings and craftsmanship. Here people found relics of the old palace grounds and some ancient ceramics.
